Guide to the Best Supplements for Long COVID

Long COVID (or Long Haul COVID) is a growing concern for many people. It can last for weeks and months, and for some people over a year. There is a growing need to find solutions to this problem.

Considering how important this issue is to tens of thousands of people, we felt that it was worth exploring if supplements (known as food supplements in the UK or dietary supplements in the US) could offer an inexpensive and ‘generally recognised as safe’ (GRAS) approach to treat and reduce Long COVID symptoms.

The results were mixed: some helped significantly and some had no observed effect. Overall - they did help, but it was important to choose carefully. Please read on to find out more, or jump to our top recommendations below.

Your Needs in Supplements for Long COVID

Often when consulting with patients with Long COVID, we found several themes emerging. People we interviewed generally wanted a supplement or supplement stacks (collections of supplements) that would meet the following criteria:

Scientifically Proven (to be sure it would work)

Fast Acting (something that worked relatively fast)

Easy to Take (not have to take dozens of different capsules)

Healthy (good for the body and natural, with no side effects)

Affordable (reasonably priced)

 Our Top Recommendations:

RecoverUp Immune Support + Magnesium Bisglycinate + CoQ10 [Best Results]

If you have the extra budget, then get all three. When adding CoQ10, start with 200mg per day and for Magnesium Bisglycinate, take 4 capsules per day (around 100% RDA/NRV). This would be the ideal supplement ‘stack’ to start your Long COVID recovery.

Zinc, Quercetin, Vitamin D (& K2), NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine), Curcumin, CoQ10, Magnesium Bisglycinate, B-Vitamin Complex [Best for Customisation]

This option is for those who want to be able to individually increase or decrease the amount of each separate supplement, and will cost considerably more. You’ll need to be careful about setting the correct dose for each ingredient. This method would work best if you have a dedicated nutritional, functional or integrative medical specialist on hand to advise.

Please note the table also includes safety information in the form of Safe Upper Levels (SUL), the No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) and Lowest Observed Adverse Effect Level (LOAEL) figures in mg or capsules per day, based on safety data from the UK Department of Health’s report amongst other sources. The amounts suggested are based on an adult weighing 60kg (9.4 stone). As such, your doctor or health professional may recommend more or less dosage based on your body weight.

Feedback for glutathione is strong, especially for reducing lung congestion (mucus) and improving breathing. There are several ways to improve levels, including via NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) or ALA (Alpha-Lipoic Acid). Taking too much NAC will cause temporary heart swelling.

Long COVID Supplements - Safety

Please note that all of the supplements below can generally be taken in conjunction with other medications given by your GP, Physician or healthcare professional, as they are considered equivalent to food in the UK (under Department of Health regulations) or GRAS (Generally Recognised As Safe) in the US (under FDA regulations).

However, always check with your doctor if unsure or if you are currently under medical supervision.

Criteria for Selecting Supplements for Long COVID

Supplements were classed as including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, plant bioactives, enzymes and synbiotics (probiotics and prebiotics). Plant bioactives include herbals and botanicals.

We focused our research for supplements that could be effective for the long term effects (‘Long COVID’) from the recent 2020-2021 outbreak of SARS-CoV-2. We also looked at supplements that could help with recovery from related forms of infection such as SARS, MERS and influenza. We also studied what worked for CFS/ME.

Supplements Dosage

Please note that dosage is important - and if something is helping your Long COVID symptoms, that doesn’t mean taking more will be helpful. Always start with a small dose and work your way to higher doses gradually, to allow your body time to adjust to the new nutrients / vitamins being consumed.
